Opportunity: COFEM Coordinating Committee Member

The Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM) is an advocacy collective of thought leaders, activists, practitioners and academics working globally to end Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). The Coordinating Committee meets virtually as a board twice monthly for a total maximum of three hours per month with the COFEM Treasurer, Strategic Advisor, and incoming COFEM Coordinator (along with other Secretariat members as necessary), to discuss and provide feedback and guidance around ongoing activities and decisions made or pending further consultations by the Secretariat. As the new Coordinator is onboarded in 2025, it is expected that the meeting times will decrease. In addition to this monthly call, it is expected that the Coordinating Committee members will each commit to a minimum of 5 additional hours of oversight work/month linked to the responsibilities outlined below, and in meetings with other Secretariat team members. Find out more about this opportunity below.

The closing date is the 26th of February 2025

Resource: AU Silencing the Guns in Africa – Activism Guide

Despite Agenda 2063 having been adopted almost ten years ago, the latest data show that Africa is the only region in the world in which homicide rates are rising and that the situation is predicted to get worse. This is due to three factors: A young population, persistent inequality and the effects of climate change. A further risk factor is the availability of guns: Although gun-related homicide in Africa has not reached the levels seen in South America (which has countries with some of the highest levels of gun violence in the world), if guns are not silenced, this will change. In support of civil society activism to help silence the guns in Africa, this guide includes information to understand the context and extent of the gun problem in Africa, as well as key actions.

Call for Public Comments: Project 94 Discussion Paper on A Mediation Act for South Africa

The South African Law Reform Commission (Commission) is pleased to announce the release for public comment of its PROJECT 94 Discussion Paper 168, which addresses the need for the adoption of a generic mediation statute dealing with commercial, civil and community mediation. This discussion paper aims to consider the development of legislation to promote the optimal use of mediation, and to provide citizens with an additional avenue to access to justice. Mediation has a long history in South Africa, and its approach to dispute resolution aligns with our African heritage, as well as our recent history. Mediation provides an effective, inexpensive, and appropriate mechanism for the timeous or early resolution of disputes compared to litigating a dispute at a high cost in court. Mediation is also a tool that is effectively used to bring disputants to the point of the early settlement of their disputes. The Commission will consider public responses to the discussion paper and test public opinion about solutions identified by the Commission. Based on such responses, a report containing the Commission’s final recommendations will be prepared. The report (with draft legislation) will be submitted to the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development for consideration for tabling in Parliament. Any inquiries about the investigation related to this discussion paper can still be made.

Please submit written comments, representations, or requests to the Commission by 30 April 2025.
