In case you missed it: Release & handover of the first South African National Gender-Based Violence Study, 2022

Human Sciences Research Council released and handed over the First South African National Gender-Based Violence Study, 2022 to Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga from the Department of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities on 18 November in Gauteng.

The report presents the findings of the first ‘fit-for-purpose’ national study on the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in all nine provinces of South Africa. It outlines the prevalence of physical, sexual, emotional, and economic violence, and psychological abuse such as controlling behaviours among youth and adults 18 years and older. The study also examines the perpetration of violence by men against their female partners and the underlying role of gender norms in driving GBV. The results provide new evidence and confirmation of the patterns of violence against women in the country. The study findings contribute to understanding the life course of victimisation and perpetration in South Africa.

Report Launch: An Exploratory Study of Elder Abuse in Cape Town Townships

Ikamva Labantu is a non-governmental organisation based in the township areas of Cape Town which has focused on the realisation of human rights of older people since the 1960s. The organisation’s Older Persons Programme supports 19 Older Persons Clubs and has a home-based care programme in the townships. To provide direction for the improvement of its programme, the organisation conducted a study, in partnership with the Association for the Aged (TAFTA) in eThekwini, South Africa, to explore the nature of elder abuse facing the organisation’s participants and their peers.

The study had four objectives: 1) to determine the range of abuse suffered by older persons; 2) to determine the perceived risks and protective factors for elder abuse; 3) to determine the gaps and strengths of community and government institutions to address elder abuse; and 4) to determine the influence of gender on elder abuse and its response by services.
