Dear VPF Friends,

Welcome to the Violence Prevention Forum newsletter. On a bi-weekly basis we will be sharing job, funding and training opportunities, details for webinars relevant to violence and its prevention, and links to new research and guidelines. We hope you find this a useful resource.

Resource: Breaking patterns of trauma and violence in the home

At the heart of many South African home sits the tough issue of how child trauma and gender-based violence combine. It is hard enough for children who see or go through this violence to deal with it. Parenting programmes like Free to Grow tackle mental health and trauma, and can help stop cycles of violence for women and children.

Read more about how improving family relationships and equipping people to handle challenges better can help stop cycles of violence.

Opportunity: MPIDR Post-Doctoral Researcher

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) provides a stimulating research-oriented community, excellent infrastructure at the MPIDR, and an institutional culture that enables everyone to develop their individual skills and competencies. The MPIDR is one of the leading demographic research centers in the world, studying issues of theoretical and policy relevance. These include, but are not limited to mortality, fertility, migration, aging, health, and the redistribution of work and transfers over the life course.

The MPIDR is seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral researcher to join the ERC-funded Research Group on Migration and Health Inequalities. The group brings together experts from Demography, Quantitative Sociology, and Social Epidemiology to address the pressing scientific and societal question:  Why do immigrants age in poorer health compared to non-immigrants?

The closing date is the 31st of October 2024

In case you missed it: Tales of Turning Webinar National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide: Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

This webinar we discussed the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in relation to the prevention of technology-facilitated gender-based violence against women leaders, journalists, peacebuilders and feminist organisations. This is important because technology-facilitated gender-based violence is an extension of offline violence which results in social, political and personal harm.

Resource: Violence Prevention Forum 19 Report

On the 18th of July, the Violence Prevention Forum hosted its 19th meeting via Zoom. This meeting took the form of a workshop where our collective goal was to develop a set of criteria to define violence prevention interventions. This online workshop was the first step towards creating a ranking matrix for use by national and provincial departments of Social Development. Participants contributed to the development of a tool that will guide the prioritization of funding for prevention interventions, in line with the draft Sector Funding Policy's proposal for a proportion of provincial funds to be allocated for prevention- related programmes.
