Opportunity: The Cameron Schrier Equality Fellowship Programme

The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS) at Wits University is proud to announce the continuation of the Cameron Schrier Inequality Fellowship, a fellowship programme for activists from civil society, senior government officials, academics, and business leaders from across the global South. The goal of the fellowship is to develop and advance links between academia, activism, and policymakers across the global South, deepening new areas of research and writing on inequality. This fellowship will be for six months, and must be based at the SCIS, in Johannesburg, South Africa. SCIS will provide resources, space and time to reflect on their work, to engage with the SCIS academic community, and to produce a publication relating to their area of focus.

Applications close on the 31st of May.

Resource: Community Dialogue for Safety and Prosperity

The Hoekwil and Touwsranten communities along South Africa’s Garden Route have been holding monthly dialogues since 2021, following concerns about a lack of safety in the area. Hoekwil and Touwsranten are less than 2 km apart, and reflect apartheid-era divisions. Most residents in Hoekwil are white and middle-class or wealthy, while those of Touwsranten are mostly working-class people of colour. The dialogues are the first significant intervention to bring residents from both areas together to build a cohesive community across lines of class and race. This assessment reveals the achievements and challenges of the process.

Resource: Cash and Voucher Assistance for Child Protection

In an effort to increase global knowledge and learning, Save the Children conducted a global review of twenty Country Offices and their programs in order to assess and highlight the impact that different forms of Cash and Vouchers Assistance (CVA) have on Child Protection (CP) outcomes, to identify evidence gaps and document best programmatic practices. This follows and uses the same methodology as the 2021 Evidence Report.

Reflections: SAPPIN Fatherhood as a Role Workshop

From 18th – 19th of March this year, SAPPIN held an initiative called the SAPPIN Fatherhood Workshop, which aimed at introducing, developing, strengthening and empowering conversation in and around fatherhood as a role, in both a personal and familial environment. Many fathers understand the importance of being present in their children’s lives but feel that the spaces and interventions for healing and ascertaining a positive narrative for men, may not always be accessible. In addition, it was jointly acknowledged that gender needs to be removed from the parenting role and should be respected as an equal responsibility for both men and women. These conclusions, and more, will be shared in our report and research article.
