Dear VPF Friends,

As we prepare for the Western Cape VPF we will be running a Newsletter series titled: “ What will it take to prevent violence in South Africa”

Reducing Violence in South Africa: from policing to prevention is the second of four Special Edition VPF updates we will be sharing.

In 2023, the National Treasury announced substantial budget cuts that will impact the delivery of social welfare services. Resourcing interventions that reduce the risk factors for violence is an investment in societal development and sustained crime reduction. Violence undermines our efforts to address unemployment and inequality and is an obstacle to individual and societal prosperity.

Faced with shrinking incomes, governments must decide how to allocate funds to public services. How does the South African government make budget decisions? And what are the opportunities and challenges to supporting violence prevention?

These are some of the questions that will be explored at the 8th meeting of the Western Cape Violence Prevention Forum on 15 and 16 May.
