Dear VPF Friends,

Welcome to the Violence Prevention Forum newsletter. On a bi-weekly basis we will be sharing job, funding and training opportunities, details for webinars relevant to violence and its prevention, and links to new research and guidelines. We hope you find this a useful resource.

You’re Invited! Webinar – Bottom-up approaches to violence Prevention

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the INSPIRE Working Group invite you to this online seminar. Bottom-up or local-level approaches to violence prevention emphasise the role of the community, local knowledge and collaboration in interventions. When based in a local setting, projects are more responsive and tailored to the specific needs of that community.

But what are the ingredients that make local-level interventions work? This seminar will showcase two unique case studies of bottom-up violence prevention in South Africa. The seminar will take place on Wednesday the 6th of December 2023.

You’re Invited! Resourcing Feminist Movements to End Violence Against Women and Children

Join COFEM for a webinar about resourcing feminist movements for ending violence against women and girls. The webinar will include talking about the value-add of feminist movements, the challenges they face, and the resources they need. COFEM looks forward to seeing you there to share experiences and advocacy messages for sustainable funding for feminist movements. Register to join the webinar on Thursday the 5th of December 2023.

Resource: Fact sheets about the DSD Sector Funding Policy

In 2023 the national Department of Social Development (DSD) approved a new Sector Funding Policy (SFP) for public comment. This new policy impacts how the DSD funds services provided by partners in the non-profit organisation (NPO) sector. It provides guidance on what services will be funded and how much will be allocated for specific services.

It is important for NPOs to know and understand what the policy means for them, and how they can constructively engage with national and provincial DSDs to ensure that key services to prevent and respond to violence are supported in the future. The Violence Prevention Forum, through the ISS and Cornerstone, with support from GIZ have produced these five factsheets to help NGOs and policy makers to understand the policy and its implications. We hope you find them helpful.

You’re Invited! Relaunch: State of Protest Report and Activist Toolkit

The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) in collaboration with Right2Protest (R2P) invites you to the relaunch of the R2P State of Protest Report and Activist Toolkit. This event is designed to gather experts, professionals, and thought leaders to engage in conversations addressing vital concerns pertaining to protests, activism and human rights. The relaunch will be held on the 7th of December 2023 from 16:00 to 20:00 at the Chalsty Auditorium at Wits University in Johannesburg.

Reflection: Safe Online -  pushing for a safer online world for children and young people

Children in the 21st century are growing up in the digital world. However, the internet was not designed with children’s safety in mind. Safe Online exists to make sure that the internet is safe for children, so that every child can take advantage of all the opportunities the internet has to offer.

Safe Online's investments result in strong systems, data and research on online trends and threats, and the technology tools needed to tackle digital harms at scale. Here are some topline impacts from 2017 - 2022.

Statement: Children are eager to have a say in government budget decisions

The Child Government Monitors (CGMs) in the office of the Western Cape Commissioner for Children have learned about government budgets and how they affect children's rights since 2022. The Commissioner has developed a child-centered approach, using games and experiential learning, to help children understand how the government and its budget work.  Initially, the CGMs found it difficult to understand the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) 2021. However, they have since become empowered to participate in public budget processes. This year, they have decided to be actively involved in budget processes. A statement has been released on the  Division of Revenue Amendment (DORA) Bill, read more below.
