Article: South Africa does have the means to reduce violence
In both the policing and violence prevention spheres, ample evidence exists about what works and where to start. Visible policing alone isn’t enough to curb violent crime, it must be supported by evidence-informed analysis, effective detection, trust-building with the public, and meaningful partnerships. The responsibility to reduce violence doesn’t rest solely with the police, it requires the whole of society. It is an urgent need for South Africa to remove sources of violence and inequality, with attention to healing past and present trauma.
