Dear VPF Friends,

Welcome to the Violence Prevention Forum newsletter. On a weekly basis we will be sharing job, funding and training opportunities, details for webinars relevant to violence and its prevention, and links to new research and guidelines. We hope you find this a useful resource.

Although the South African government acknowledges the importance of preventing violence, many existing interventions at community level are delivered by non-governmental organisations. Speakers at this event will share their research findings about scaling-up the delivery of violence prevention, and opportunities for increasing the quality and impact of these programmes.

This online seminar is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Department of the Premier, Western Cape Government.

This webinar will take place on the 10th of May 2023.

Publication: GCRO Vignette #44 - Intersections of intimate partner violence and food insecurity in Gauteng

The Gauteng City-Region Observatory has  released research observing Poverty-related factors have been associated with increased levels of IPV. Food insecurity is a proxy for poverty, but it also has a specific causal pathway leading to greater risk of IPV for women. Because of widely-shared societal norms and historical gender roles that position men as the expected ‘providers’ or ‘breadwinners’ in a household, an inability to put food on the table can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, stress, disempowerment and misplaced anger among men. This in turn may lead to an increased risk of IPV for female partners.
